Description

Sori inconspicuous, destroying the spikelets, leaving the glumes and the apical part of the floral envelopes intact, c. 1.5–2.0 mm long and 1 mm wide, at first covered by the remnants of floral envelopes which fall in one piece at maturity exposing the black powdery masses of spores which are scattered and leaving the columella-like axis of the spikelet. Peridium, sterile cells and spore balls absent.

Spores rather variable, globose, ovoid, elongate to irregular, 12–19 (–21) × 11–17 µm, medium to dark reddish brown; wall uniformly 1.0–1.5 µm thick, finely and rather densely punctate-echinulate; spore profile minutely crenulate.
