Description

Sori in interior of the culms, often spirally twisted, to 15 cm long, rupturing longitudinally and exposing the blackish brown granular-powdery mass of spore balls.

Spore balls globose to irregular, 22–56 (–64) × 20–44 µm, composed of 1–20 (or more?) spores completely enveloped by sterile cells.

Spores subglobose, ovoid or slightly irregular, 11–16 (–19) × 9.5–13.0 µm diam., reddish brown, smooth.

Sterile cells 5.5–14.5 (–16.0) µm long, light reddish brown, often collapsing when dried.
