Tilletia viennotii H. Sydow

Description

Sori in all ovaries of an inflorescence, ovoid, c. 2.0–2.5 mm long and 1.5 mm wide, completely hidden by the floral envelopes, at first covered by a thin greyish brown membrane (pericarp) that ruptures irregularly exposing the dark brown powdery foetid mass of spores and sterile cells; infected plants can be slightly stunted and are recognised by the somewhat spreading floral envelopes.

Spores globose, subglobose, ovoid to broadly ellipsoidal, 21.5–28.0 (–30.0) × 21–26 (–28) µm, yellowish brown, reticulate, often incompletely so, 6–9 meshes per spore diameter; muri 2–3 (–4) µm high.

Sterile cells globose, subglobose, ellipsoidal or slightly irregular, 12–24 × 12–23 µm, hyaline; wall uniformly 0.5–2.5 µm thick, smooth.
