Description

Sori in some ovaries of an inflorescence, initially green, later brown spherical or pyriform bodies visible between the glumes, 1–3 (–4) mm long, 1–2 mm wide, covered by a peridium of fungal and host origin which ruptures irregularly to expose the dark brown powdery spore mass mixed with sterile cells; often the distal part of the sorus bearing a remnants of the caryopsis as a hard yellowish brown acute body.

Spores globose, subglobose to ovoid, occasionally elongate or irregular, 8–11 (–13) × 6.5–9.0 (–10) µm, light brown; wall uniformly c. 0.5 µm thick, finely moderately densely verrucose-echinulate; spore profile wavy to usually finely serrulate.

Sterile cells globose, subglobose, ellipsoidal, rarely elongate, 6–11 × 5.5–8.0 µm, hyaline, collapsed in old specimens; wall c. 0.5 µm thick, smooth.

Spore germination of Ustilago-type.
