Description

Sori in the ovaries, swollen, asymmetrically ovoid-fusiform, 3–6 mm long, 0.5–2.5 mm wide, ±hidden by the floral envelopes, covered by the pericarp that ruptures at maturity exposing the blackish brown, at first agglutinated later granular-powdery mass of spore balls, or the sori fall from the plants unopened; columella absent.

Spore balls produced from sporogenous hyphae on the raphe side of the seeds; immature spore balls surrounded by concentrically arranged hyaline hyphae. Spore balls globose, subglobose, ellipsoidal, elongate to subpolyhedral or irregular, 25–110 (–130) × 20–80 µm (in some collections 25–50 or 40–140 µm long), reddish brown to opaque, composed of tens of spores that separate readily by pressure.

Spores not or only slightly dimorphic, subpolyhedrally irregular, rarely subglobose or broadly ellipsoidal, 6.5–10.5 × 5.5–9.0 µm, yellowish to reddish brown; wall evenly or slightly unevenly thick, c. 0.5 µm, ±smooth to finely verruculose, especially on the exposed surface and just affecting the spore profile.

Sterile cells absent.

Comments

Vánky (2001) noted that the smut fungi on Aristida were a taxonomically difficult group with most specimens belonging to L. aristidae or to morphologically close species (see comments under L. confusa).
