Description

Stromata in clefts of inrolled leaf blades, up to 20 cm long and 0.5-0.6 mm wide, black.

Conidiomata on stromata, ephemeral, irregularly hysteriform, acervulus-pycnidium like.

Conidia of one type

  • produced on short, simple, hyaline conidiophores on the surface of the conidioma, acicular, 23-26 x 1-1.2 µm, hyaline, aseptate.

Perithecia develop after the conidia in a single row along the stroma surface, globose-sub globose, 350-480 µm long x 260-360 µm in diameter, necks projecting slightly above the stroma.

Asci elongated fusoid, 180-310 x 12-23 µm, tapering each way to slender ends, more strongly so at the base, with a dome-shaped thickening at the apex.

Ascospores filiform, multiseptate later separating into many narrowly fusoid part-ascospores while in ascus, 7-45 x 0.5-1 µm straight or slightly curved.

Comments

This unusua lfungus was first recorded in Australia on lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) in southern Queensland in 1994, and later on sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) in the same region (Shivas et al., 1999). It is not known how the fungus was introduced into Australia, and whether or not it was transmitted between the two hosts.
